How Long Do Reconstituted Peptides Last at 2–8°C? Stability Windows by Compound Type
"How long does it last after reconstitution?" is the most asked question in practical peptide work. The honest answer is compound-specific, but the variables that set the window are few and predictable. Here is how to reason about it — and the working numbers labs actually use.
What actually degrades a peptide in solution
- Hydrolysis — water slowly attacks peptide bonds; faster when warm, faster at extreme pH.
- Oxidation — methionine, cysteine and tryptophan residues oxidize on exposure to air and light. Sequences carrying them age faster in solution.
- Aggregation — molecules clump, often invisibly at first; shaking, freeze-thaw cycles and surface foaming accelerate it dramatically.
- Microbial growth — the one factor a preservative controls. With 0.9% benzyl alcohol (bacteriostatic water), microbes are held static; in plain sterile water they are not.

The rules that extend (or destroy) a window
- Refrigerate immediately and always. Every day at room temperature costs disproportionate stability — the rate roughly doubles per 10°C.
- Never freeze reconstituted solution. One freeze-thaw cycle can aggregate more material than weeks of proper storage.
- Reconstitute gently. Degradation clocks start at mixing; foam from shaking is day-zero damage (see technique guide).
- Date the vial at first puncture. The 30-day preservative window runs from that day, not from when the powder arrived.
- Split large protocols. If a study needs six weeks of material, reconstituting two vials three weeks apart beats stretching one vial past its window.
When to retire a vial early
Cloudiness that doesn't clear, particulates, fibers, color change, or any doubt about cold-chain custody. Degradation is not always visible — drifting assay results with an old vial are a stability signal too.
